A Bit of our History

In 1965, Chuck Byrd and a group of young racers approached Frank Halvorsen about the use of his land off of Queensway Drive.  They had no money—only a willingness to work hard to make the dream of a race track a reality.  They turned to the Terrace community for help and soon had lots of support.  The track could not have been built without the donation of heavy equipment and supplies from local businesses.  Months were spent clearing bush, moving dirt and gravel, draining the infield, and building fences.  After almost two years of work, the first races were held July 28, 1967, on the oval dirt track.  The track was paved in 1972.  The Terrace Stock Car Association was incorporated under the Societies Act in 1979 and the land was eventually purchased from Halvorson in the early 1990’s.

In 1975, a terrible tragedy occurred. Two long-time racers at the Terrace Speedway, Marty Cox and Dexter Archibald, were killed in a car accident on their way home from racing in Prince George. A special race was held in their memory that year—the Memorial Race. From that point on, the Memorial Race is run each year in Honor of all Terrace Speedway members who have since passed away.
